Grade 4 was pointing North without using a compass. We used a shadow stick method.
You can do the same at home. Just do what we did!
We cleared a flat area of sand, found a stick and poked it into the ground so it stood up.
Then we got a small pebble and placed it on the end of the shadow line. We waited for a half hour.
Next, we placed another pebble at the end of the new shadow.
The line between the two pebbles ran east-west.
North direction was perpendicular to the east-west line.
